Even those that do not consider themselves woodworkers, may find some projects that are easy to build. These simple projects will definitely enhance your outdoor living space.

Building an Adirondack Chair

Everybody loves the look and comfort of an Adirondack chair. They are readily available for prices that can top $200. However, you can build one yourself, using weather-resistant lumber, for about $30. Many plans are available at the home center or even on the Internet. These plans will show you the different pieces that will need to be cut and the simple assembly that is required. Carefully follow the directions to cut all pieces needed for your chair. It is a good idea to use sandpaper to smooth out any rough spots or splinters. Assemble as detailed in the plans using high quality exterior glue to ensure its durability.

All you need is:

• 3 pieces of 1″x8″x8′
• 2 pieces of 1″x4″x8′
• (50) 1 1/2″ coated deck screws
• Cordless drill
• Circular saw
• Jigsaw
• Exterior wood glue
• Sand paper

Building a Fan Trellis

A fan trellis can be a great addition to any deck, patio or existing landscaping. The only wood that you need to create this trellis is treated lattice strips. Start by butting 5 strips 84″ long. Place the strips on a flat surface, evenly stacking them together. Glue, screw and wrap wire around 8″ on one end of the stacked strips. Then cut two pieces from the remaining lattice strip (36″ and 24″). Equally spread the existing five strips to create a fan shape and nail the 36” strip at the widest point into the edge of each lattice strip to hold its shape. Install the 24” strip at the midway point and nail it in place as well. You are now ready to place the fan trellis in the ground or your favorite planter. Simply add a climbing vine in front of the trellis and attach to encourage upward growth.

Here’s what you need:

• (6) treated lattice strips to create the fan shape
• Small coated deck screws
• Drill
• Hand saw
• Small galvanized nails
• Hammer
• Exterior wood glue
• Wire

Side Table

Even the scrap lumber left over from your projects can be used to construct an attractive small side table. Determine the height that would be ideal for the table, cut all pieces needed, and assemble the pieces using glue and coated deck screws to create your table. Before you know it, you’ll be able to surround yourself with your new creations in your outdoor space.
