Advantages of Properly Inflated Tires

Green Home, Thinking Green, Video by Danny Lipford

Under inflated tires lose about 0.4% of their fuel efficiency for every pound under their recommended pressure. Proper inflation:

  • Increases fuel efficiency
  • Reduces pollution emissions
  • Makes tires last longer
  • Saves money on gas

If every car in the U.S. maintained the proper air pressure in their tires, it would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 11 billion pounds a year. So break out your tire gauge and check your tires regularly.

With gasoline prices as high as they are these days, every little thing you can do to cut back helps. That’s why I’m checking the air in my tires. Under inflated tires lose about 0.4 percent of their fuel efficiency for every pound under their recommended weight, so proper inflation increases fuel efficiency. Less fuel used means less carbon dioxide emissions, and if every car in the US maintained the proper air pressure in their tires, up to 11 billion fewer pounds of carbon dioxide would be emitted by drivers each year. That’s true green in action. One other benefit is that properly inflated tires last longer, which cuts down on landfill waste and raw materials being used to make new tires. So break out your tire gauge and make sure there’s a shade of green where the rubber meets the road.
