All of our landscapes need rain, and yet often it creates as many problems as it solves. The runoff from our roofs often destroys our flowerbeds. Instead of simply letting downspouts dump water into the garden, consider installing drainage grates underground to receive the runoff and carry it away to safer areas. The grates can be removed for cleaning from time to time.

Sir,
I have a drainage problem. My lot slopes
toward the front of my house, causing my
porch to flood. I have trenched a small area in front of the house, but am afraid that this may cause the water to seep under the slab. I need advice.

the problem I have is similiar to the one david flott has but I was thinking of having a retaing wall in front of the house where there is dropoff sloped down about 2 1/2 ft. The main problem is my electric and water and telephone line come right to the front corner of the house which is where most of the water gets under the house. I’m afraid if I dig down too far then these will be exposed. I’m not so worried about the electric and telephone lines but my water line freezing in the winter. Any ideas would be appreciated. Oh by the way the frost line here is about 18 inches which is about how deep these lines are. greg may
