Installing a programmable thermostat controls the temperature in your home while you’re away so the heating and cooling system will use less energy. While this can save up to 15% a year on utility bills, the actual amount will vary depending on how it is set and the amount of time the house is vacant each day. If you have a heat pump, use one of the newer hybrid thermostats that are designed to work with these systems.

A programmable thermostat makes it possible for you heat or cool your house just before you arrive home. As example folks don’t like returning to a cold home after work so they are reluctant to turn the thermostat down when they leave for work. A programmable thermostat can be set to turn the temperature back up an hour before you get home so your house is comfortable when you arrive.
