How to Caulk Around a Tub

Kitchens and Baths, Repairs and Installation, Video by Danny Lipford

Sealing the joint around a tub is important to prevent water from seeping behind the tile which can cause the wood framing to mold or rot.

  • Start by scoring the old caulking with a utility knife.
  • Next, use a putty knife or scraper to remove it.
  • Clean the joint well and dry the area thoroughly with a hair dryer.
  • Once the joint is dry, seal the gap with 100% silicone caulk.
  • To smooth out silicone caulk, dip your finger in mineral spirits before running it along the bead, or use a product such as Caulk-EZ which is made for that purpose. Simply spray it on top of the caulking before smoothing.
