How to Test and Filter Drinking Water for Lead and Other Contaminants

While water from municipal utilities is considered safe to drink, if you live in an older home that has copper pipes, the water can pick up lead from the solder that was used to join the pipes.
Water testing kits are available that allow you to find out if contaminants such as lead are present in your water. If they are, you can install a water filter designed to remove them. Be sure to change the filter regularly following the manufacturer’s instructions.
