Memorial Day is considered the unofficial start of summer so many of celebrate it with family and friends in a big backyard barbecue. But this holiday was originally called Decoration Day, a day to remember those who have died in our nation’s service. Memorial Day was first officially proclaimed in 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. The first observance of the holiday was on May 30 of that year, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. Unfortunately, the “Memorial” in Memorial Day has been overlooked by too many of us who benefit from the courage and commitment of those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. This year, take some time out of your familie’s festivities to honor those who have given so much and pause to think about the real meaning of Memorial Day.
