For many homeowners green, healthy lawn is a badge of honor that says more about them than the car parked in the driveway. But sometimes before it can look good it has to look bad….I’m talking about aerating. This process digs up cigar sized plugs of soil from the lawn and scatters them on the surface. It isn’t a pretty sight right after it’s done but the benefits are enormous. Eventually those clumps of soil break down and the lawn looks normal again but the holes that are left allow air, water and nutrients to go deeper down into the soil. Plus the extra space allows compacted soil to loosen up which makes it easier for roots to dig in. Aeration in early spring, followed by a fertilizer feeding sets your lawn up for healthy growing season.
