The combination of friends, family and food at holiday time can leave your house looking like a war zone. And if you have carpeting… you know it takes some of the worst punishment of all. But there is hope for even the toughest stains and spills. Here are just a few examples…To remove chewing gum, put several ice cubes in a plastic bag and hold it on the gum so you can freeze the sticky stuff. When it hardens, scrape it away with a butter knife. For greasy stains like lipstick, blot up the excess with a clean cloth and then use dry cleaning fluid to lift the stain. For spilled fruit juice or soft drink stains mix a few teaspoons of laundry detergent and white vinegar in a quart of warm water and sponge the spot well.
