Because cordless drills are so convenient and inexpensive you’re more likely to find a home with one, than a home without one. That means that a lot of people with very little “power tool experience” own these things, so here are some homeowner hints for using cordless drills. Safety first.…use eye protection whenever you’re drilling. If you’re driving screws in wood,  pre-drill first. The bit you use for this should be smaller in diameter than the shaft of the screw, allowing it to grab onto the wood without cracking. If the drill has two speed settings, use the higher one for drilling and the lower one for driving screws. Finally, always make sure that the material you’re drilling or driving screws into is held secure.
