The beginning of Daylight Savings Time is a great time to change the batteries in all of your smoke detectors and give them a quick check- up. These units have a limited life span so they may need to be replaced if they are more than 6 or 7 years old. If you’re doing that, think carefully about where they are installed. Remember that fire, heat and smoke rise so smoke detectors should always be installed on or near ceilings in as many rooms as possible. Install them at the top of all stairways and in the center of rooms and hallways. Remember never place a detector in a corner, near a vent or a window opening. And finally don’t forget about including smoke detectors in your basement, attic and garage.
