You can save as much as 10 percent on cooling bills by turning the thermostat up 10 to 15 percent for 8 hours each day and you can do that automatically by installing a programmable thermostat. These devices allow you to adjust the times your air-conditioner operates according to a pre-set schedule that you create to match your lifestyle. For example, this summer you could program the thermostat to let the house be a few degrees warmer during the daytime while you’re away at work. Then, just before you arrive home in the evenings, it would bring the temperature back down to a comfortable level. If you decide to take the day off and stay home, you can simply override the program. They’re easy to install and many are available for as little as $50.
