The temperature and pressure relief valve, or TPR valve, is a water heater’s fail safe for the high pressures it can generate. When pressure builds in a 30-gallon water heater due to a broken temperature relief valve, it can explode with the force of two pounds of dynamite. Experts report one-third of all water heater TPR valves are not operational because of mineral buildup, rust or corrosion. So test yours every six months. The temperature pressure relief valve is that little lever on top or side of your water heater. If it won’t budge with normal hand pressure, tap it lightly with a hammer to loosen it. If it leaks, open and close it several times to dislodge any debris. If you can’t stop the leak, replace it! A clean valve, in good working order, is a must!
