A do-it-yourself ceramic tile countertop is an inexpensive way to upgrade your kitchen and you can install one right over the existing laminate top. Start by removing the sink and protecting the front of the cabinets. Next, use a circular saw to trim off the round over front edge and back splash from the laminate tops. Smooth out any uneven spots in the cuts with coarse sand paper and then sand the top lightly to create a better bond for the tile adhesive. This adhesive, or thinset, is applied over the whole surface with a notched trowel before the tiles are positioned in it. After the tile has set overnight you can apply the grout with a rubber grout float and a damp sponge. Finally, Buff out the remaining grout haze with a soft, dry cloth and reinstall the sink.
