Area rugs and runners make great additions to hard surface floors like wood, laminate and tile but when they start sliding around they can really cause problems. The decision to buy these rugs is usually based on size, design and color…not the presence of a non-slip backing. You can buy non-slip tape which has limited success and the non-skid mats that lay on the floor beneath rugs have better success but are expensive, especially for larger sizes. Instead, try this tip. Buy a tube or two of 100 percent clear silicone caulk and lay a generous bead all around the back side of the rug. Then take a putty knife and gently drag it over the bead to flatten it out. When the silicone dries you’ll have your own non-skid backing to keep the rug in place.
