Changing out tub hardware is a great way to give your bathroom a new, updated look. But sometimes it’s nearly impossible to remove a threaded tub faucet by hand, especially if it’s been in place for years. Adjustable locking pliers might do the trick but they’ll scratch the hardware in the process. The solution is a thick wooden dowel to provide the needed leverage. In some cases a piece of an old wooden broom handle is the perfect size. First, make sure the faucet has no set screw beneath, indicating it’s a push-on type. If not, it’s a threaded model. Insert the dowel into the faucet opening as far as possible and begin turning it counterclockwise. If you plan to reuse the fitting and don’t want to mar the finish, simply wrap the dowel in a soft cloth.
