How to Make Tile Drink Coasters and Trivets for Your Home
By: Julie Day
Coasters made using glass tiles and self-adhesive pads.
One of the best ways to protect your furniture from unsightly stains and water rings is by using coasters. I think good coasters are hard to find – they’re often too small for my jumbo-sized coffee mugs, or they stick to the glass and go clattering to the floor, or they’re just plain tacky!
Here’s an easy – and economical – solution for homemade drink coasters using your favorite ceramic tiles.
This tip couldn’t be easier! All you need are:
Tiles for Coasters

A variety of ceramic, glass, stone, or metal tiles. Be creative! You can use salvaged or antique tiles, leftovers from a home project, or pick out some you like at the store. For the prettiest coasters, look for decorative accent tiles with glazed edges. Smaller 4” tiles work great for drinks while 6” tiles can serve double duty as both coasters and trivets. You can even use large 12” tiles to make trivets for your dining table.
Felt or Rubber Pads

Self-adhesive felt or rubber pads are readily available in the furniture section of your home center near the casters and furniture glides. You can choose between small dots, larger squares, and even full sheets that you can cut yourself. Felt pads will slide more easily; rubber pads will grip the table. It really doesn’t matter which kind you use, though I like to get the thicker ones that will lift the coaster a little farther off the table in case it’s hot.
Attach Pads to Tile

Simply peel off the paper backing, and stick the felt or rubber pads on the bottom of the tiles, one in each corner.
Scatter the tiles around on your furniture, or arrange them in a pretty pattern in the middle of your coffee table. And you’re done!
