   Can you please advise what height above a seat is standard for the armrest? I am building a couch that has the standard seat height, is flat and level but has a slightly slope fro the armrest to the top of it and I’m having trouble finding the normal armrest height

   what is the standard distance between upper cabinets that flank the kitchen sink, like when you have no window and a high cabinet above the sink?

   Hi Lily,
   The horizontal distance between the full hanging cabinets over a sink is usually about the width of the sink or wider. For a standard 33″ wide double sink, the hanging cabinet is usually 32″.

    I need to know what the “standard” depth of an upper cabinet is outside and inside. It seems that plate sizes vary.

    Hi Beverly,
    On hanging kitchen cabinets, the depth is usually around 11 1/4″ on the inside (plates are around 10 1/2″ to 11″ in diameter), with a total outside depth of around 12″ when you add in the back (1/4″ plywood) and face frame (3/4″ solid wood).

    This site gave me the measurements I needed. Thanks! I have a different question re: remodeling. How difficult is it to change from electric water heater to gas, eco-friendly, heatupon need water heater system? How difficult is it to change from an electric heat pump heat and a/c to gas heat and keep the elec heat pump? Is there a cost benefit? I’ve been heating an 1144 sq ft home for 4 yrs with rollaway radiators that run on elec since the heat pump and backup elec heat unit failed, and saved money over the heating bill with the heat pump. Does gas heat save money over elec rollaway radiators? I live in Louisiana.

    Hi Jackie,
    Whether a gas or electric is less expensive to operate a water heater or heating will vary depending on the prices of utilities in your area, but generally gas is cheaper for heating hot water and your home than electricity, particularly in colder climates. Air based electric heat pumps work well if the climate isn’t too cold, but become inefficient under 35 degrees F. Geothermal heat pump are very efficient no matter where you live, but are expensive to install. You can find a calculator that allows you to compare the cost of operating gas and electric water heaters, based on the utility costs in your area, in our article Choosing a Hot Water Heater.     I have a very tall (36″) dining table. The ceiling in the dining room is 13 feet, so the table more or less looks okay, but I will have to find chairs (or have them custom made). Do you know how high the seats should be and how high above the table top would look best for the chair backs? I thought about fancy bar stools, but I haven’t yet found any that I like.

    Hi Ben,

    Do you know where I can find all possible dimensions for all furniture types but in METERS? I have a test in a few days and I cant find except in inches and not all furniture either. I’m looking for DOORS, CARPETS, BED FRAMES, WALL CLADDING BORDER SIZES, ALCOVE DIMENSIONS, OPEN SHELVES THICKNESS AND HEIGHTS, DRAWERS ALL TYPES INCLUDING DISTANCES BETWEEN EACH DRAWER EDGE, Basically im looking into all dimensional details for my AutoCAD test

    Im replacing my base cabinets,and everyone is telling me to get the 60in sink base but the cabinets measurements dont equal up to that its more.Do i get the 36 in sink base plus 2 extra base cabinets to put on each side? Or once the fill strip are put in all of it equals out. Thank you
