Stop Junk Mail and Save a Tree

Millions of trees are cut down every year and turned into paper for junk mail—not to mention the energy used to process, print, and deliver it all. Do your part to stem the flow by calling companies that send you unwanted catalogs and ask them to stop. Next, go to the Direct Marketing Association website to remove your name from mass marketing mailing lists for five years. Finally, you can opt-out of preapproved credit offers for two years at the Consumer Credit Reporting Industry website.

I hate junk mail just as much as the next guy, but don’t worry about saving trees from extinction. Trees are truly a renewable resource. Forestry is just like farming: plant trees; cut them down; plant more trees; cut them down; plant more trees. Most of the trees removed for production were planted for that purpose. They aren’t going to need to take the big oak tree out of your front yard to make more more paper. But if you feel up to the challenge, try using plastic toilet paper.
