Using Marble Tile for a Kitchen Countertop

I’m considering installing marble tile countertops in my kitchen. Is marble a good choice for a kitchen countertop? -Tom
Hi Tom,
Marble is a porous stone that can stain easily if not sealed properly and resealed periodically. Since you will be installing tiles, be sure to use a grout sealer to seal the grout lines as well.
Marble is also much softer than granite, making it more prone to scratching. While marble is heat resistant, placing hot items directly on a marble countertop is not recommended, since it can result in an irreparable discoloration.
The bottom line is that though marble is beautiful, it has significant disadvantages that make it less durable and require more maintenance than some of the other countertops options available.

We installed a marble countertop in our kitchen a few years back and I am not happy with how it is looking. Not poliched looking no matter what we try and the grout is coming out in many places. I know, I believe, the big mistake that was made–no sealent was used. We can’t afford to start over, so we are hoping to sand lightly to get rid of the stains that won’t come out then replace the grout, repolish and PUT A SEALANT on. Hoping you have tips and instructions in what to do in this case so it won’t happen again. What polish do you recommend and how often do you agree to polich it. As soon as home prices rebound, we want to sell from a colonial to a one story as I have multiple sclerosis and this is not a safe home for me to be living in. Any advice or instructions you can share with us would be greatly appreciated as I know this won’t help selling the house. The countertop was beautiful at first until the stains started to show then the grout started to thin. We appreciate any guidance you can offer. Thank You Very Much,
