Vines make a great addition to a trellis or lattice but they do require some attention. Lawn and garden expert Tricia Craven-Worley explains that the trick is early attention. “The saying about vines” she says, “is the first year it sleeps, the second year it creeps, and the third year it leaps.” So patience is important.

Tricia says the key is consulting a local nurseryman to find out what will thrive in your climate (don’t ignore roses as a possibility) and then check it often. Prune a bit here and there and direct it where you want it to go on the trellis. Some plants will wrap themselves around the trellis while others may need you to help them out with a plant tie here or there.
