Folding attic stairs can be one of the biggest culprits for air infiltration of your home. Here’s how to fix the problem:

  • Install foam weather stripping around the perimeter of the attic stair opening. This creates a seal that prevents most of the air infiltration.
  • Construct an insulating stair cover in the attic using foam insulation board.
  • Another option is to purchase an insulated attic stair cover such as the Attic Tent. The cover is stapled to the framing in the attic and can be unzipped for easy access. Fill any gaps around the stairs before installing the cover to ensure a tight seal.
