Over time the seal on an insulated, double-pane glass window can break, allowing humid air in which can cause the glass between the panes to fog. While you could replace the glass, another option is to hire a service to come to your home to clean between the panes and repair the damage.

The repair process can be less expensive than replacing the glass and reduces waste at landfills. Here’s how it works:

  • A 3/8” diameter hole is drilled in the top and bottom of the outer pane of glass.
  • Various cleaning solutions are sprayed through the top hole in the glass and sucked back out the bottom hole to clean between the panes of glass.
  • Once the inside of the window glass has been cleaned, drying agents are used to remove moisture between the panes.
  • A special valve is then inserted in each of the holes to prevent air from entering.

The company that did this procedure, Crystal Clear Window Works hasn’t responded to our recent calls or e-mails, so I’m not sure whether they are still in business or not. Regardless, the “find a dealer” page on their website doesn’t list a dealer in Tennessee, New Jersey, or Colorado. There is one listed in Costa Mesa, California, near Los Angeles. I don’t know of another company providing this service at present.

    Hi Doug,
We tried to contact the company that provided this service, Crystal Clear Window Works, on several occasions with no success. Since they were unresponsive, we removed the link to their site. Their website is still up at http://www.crystalclearwindowworks.com should you wish to try to contact them. Good luck with your project!

It looks good on video, but what about the break in the seal that caused the problem in the first place? If it’s still unsealed the problem will recur. Yes? No?

This is just what I was looking for; a way to repair the foggy glass without replacing the glass. I watched the video but it is unclear how long the repair lasts. Could you please provide a company referrals for the Richmond, Virginia area so I can learn more. Thank you.

I am not sure this is good solution. It is critical that windows be well caulked and painted on the exterior to prevent moisture infiltration.
