Up to half of the heating and cooling loss in older homes is due to heat loss and gain through single pane glass windows along with air infiltration in the weather stripping around the sash.
While you could replace the entire window unit, a less expensive option is to install sash packs, like those from JELD-WEN Windows and Doors, to replace the sash and balance tracks without removing the window frame.

I saw the show in reference to replacing just the sashes-is this something an average do it yourselfer can do? I am hoping this is a route I can go to replace my old windows, since the cost is a major factor.
