Wouldn’t it be great to see exactly how much space a kitchen island will take up before it’s actually installed? An inexpensive way to get a realistic sense of this space is to construct a full-scale model of the island out of cardboard. A great place to pick up oversized boxes is an appliance store. According to the National Kitchen and Bath Association you should have 42″ between your main countertop and the island counter. In addition, there needs to be 36″ between the counter and a walkway. With a cardboard model you can measure this and then easily move the island where it needs to be. If the island is too big to accommodate this you can easily shrink down the cardboard island to see what will work.
