Use: Provides Internet phone service using your computer
Cost: $19.95 + $19.95 (1-year service) = $39.90 (for 1st year)
Rating: ★★★★★

The magicJack plugs into a computer equipped with broadband Internet access to use your existing phone to make local, long distance, and international calls. Installation of the magicJack is easy, simply plug one end into a USB port on your computer and the other into a phone. Upload the installation software, and you’re ready to go.

Audio quality in our test was good, but your computer must remain on for the phone to work. When the computer is turned off or goes into sleep mode, all calls are sent to voice mail. In addition to the initial purchase price, the service must be renewed each year for an additional charge ($19.95 at present).

The magicJack is available at retail outlets and by mail order.
