According to a study by Worldwatch News, water tables are dropping steadily in several major food-producing regions as groundwater is pumped faster than nature replenishes it. So much water is being diverted for irrigation and other uses that many major rivers now run dry for large portions of the year. We can make a difference, though, if we all practice these few water saving tips:

  • Landscape with plants that need less water.
  • Don’t overwater.
  • Water lawns during the time of day when temperature and wind speeds are lowest to reduce evaporation.
  • Use a soaker hose instead of a sprinkler system to better target the water to your plants.
  • Mulch plants well to retain moisture…and
  • Set your lawnmower blades to 3 inches or higher to encourage your lawn to grow deeper roots and hold moisture better.
